The MISSION of Tallinn University of Technology (TUT) is to provide educational, research and innovation services in the fields of engineering and entrepreneurship, which are internationally competitive and significant for Estonia's sustained development.
TUT is the only university in engineering and technology in Estonia. This fact contributes to the University's strategic positioning. Secondly, through its development (founded in 1918), TUT has established a well-rooted engineering education tradition. Thirdly, TUT's ALUMNI compose a large portion of decision makers in Estonian businesses. According to statistics, in each economic sector - be it power engineering, information technology, banking or entrepreneurship – TUT's graduates are most successful. ALUMNI members take active part in strategic planning and university positioning. Our geographical position, the heart of the Nordic-Baltic on the coast of the Baltic Sea, provides a good exposure to advanced technology markets. Therefore we need effective participation in European HE area and effective participation in European Research Area, contribution to realisation of national goals and realisation of institutional goals.
To increase programs taught in English (13 full master programs), geographic distributions of partners like USA, Mediterranean, Japan, Russia, Ukraine, China, Australia, and other countries, better positioning in organisations like EUA, UNICA, SEFI, EAIE, WITEC, CESAER, BALTECH, and international programs like the Framework, Lifelong learning ERASMUS, Leonardo da Vinci, Grundvig, TEMPUS and others.
The Universities have complementary strengths that reflect a wide range of expertise, as well as a multiplicity of international links not only in engineering but also in economics, social science and biomedical research areas.
The implementation of internationalisation at TUT has provided a unique forum, the possibilities in cooperation with Europe’s universities, other higher education institutions and partners to discuss the increasingly important role of institutions and students in implementing Bologna and in making the knowledge society a reality for Europe’s citizens everywhere.
Student Union, BEST, IAESTE, AIESEC international student organisations represented by TUT national units are the strongest allies at present.
TUT has an open-public university status and therefore accountability, autonomy and university corporate leadership issues have approached different tasks and risks.
The internationalisation process in Estonia in 2010 offers an excellent platform for the discussion of current trends and future direction in higher education in Europe, and an important opportunity to be partners in transnational projects and networks on expert level in the field contributing to issues of common importance.
Actually in 2010 TUT started seriously the positioning and also work on international strategy as the will of all the staff and student body, academic and administrative units recognize the need.

International Study Center (ISC)
TUT wants to make sure all international students feel good in their new environment. To realize this aim, the University has established the International Study Center (ISC).
ISC takes care of:
* international recruitment
* admission
* student services
Student Tutor
The tutors are a group of 2nd- and 3rd-year students who have volunteered to tutor as members of the International Club of TUT. Your tutors will be active, happy and helpful young people who will be ready to help you in all sorts of things: they will show you around the campus, guide you in the system of studies and show the practical side of living in Estonia. Tutors have an active roll in Orientation Days, events and other social activities arranged for international students. They are happy to help you in all problems you might have.
“Meet and Greet” Service
To make sure your arrival in Estonia is safe, we can arrange a student tutor to meet you at the Tallinn airport, harbor, railway station or bus station. Just let us know the time and date in advance and the tutor can pick you up.
Orientation Days
In the beginning of each fall semester the University organizes Orientation Days for all international students. During Orientation Days you will get lot of practical information about studying in TUT and living in Estonia and Tallinn. You will get to know your fellow students, tutors, faculty, staff, the University buildings and the city of Tallinn. Traditionally Orientation Days end with a student party organized by tutors and student organizations. We will also provide you with a “Student Guide” where you can find all the necessary information about TUT, Tallinn and life in Estonia.
“Dish Market”
Every year right before the beginning of each fall semester TUT organizes a “Dish Market” for international students. At the beginning of fall semester, the university’s staff and faculty collect some dishes, cutlery and other domestic goods to help international students settle in. This initiative makes the life of the international students a bit easer at the time of their arrival—and since all the things at the market are free of charge, the student’s save some money too.
Health care and insurance
The quality of health care in Estonia is set according to European Union standards. EU citizens who have received their European Health Insurance Card are eligible for medical treatment equal to that of Estonian citizens. Students from outside of the EU are required to have travel insurance when applying for their temporary residence permit. Upon their arrival in Estonia they need to get a one-year insurance policy for full-coverage, they must renew the policy each year when they renew their residence permit. ISC will help you to arrange the best health insurance policy in Estonia, if needed. No special vaccinations or health certificates are required when entering Estonia.

What can I do in Tallinn other than study?
This largely depends on the time of year. Summer activities naturally include a lot of sunbathing on the beach. In Tallinn there are several beautiful sandy beaches, and water that may seem too chilly for a southerner is just right for any Estonian who wants to swim, play water polo or go windsurfing. In winter snow abounds, so you can go sledging, skiing and snowboarding, which have become popular in Estonia. And if you feel a bit tired and just want to relax, you can go to one of our spas or some water centre to have a great time with your friends. The Estonian restaurant scene is amazingly diverse, especially in Tallinn. There are Indian, Tex-Mex, Thai and Georgian restaurants, as well as Hungarian, Japanese, Chinese and Greek ones. There are numerous nightclubs with styles of music to fit every taste. So there are plenty of things to do with your spare time.
ESN TUT International Club
- is a society set up by the Student’s Council of Tallinn University of Technology. It is also a section of Erasmus Student Network (ESN), an international student organization set up to help exchange students.
Its mission is to help foreign students on settling in into the Estonian lifestyle and make their stay in Estonia as smooth and pleasant as possible.
